Politically, India can be described as a democratic fluid anarchy (just like its drivers) with communism and regional loyalties which prevail in the state of Kerala. Today there is a very fine line between the sacred and the political as regards to the cow. Political parties offer farmers a stipend to paint the horns of their cows the color of the party. They stroll the streets, thus adorned with the absolute knowledge that they are indeed something honored, respected and protected, oblivious to the fact that they have also become yet another symbol. The sacred/political cows are also affectionately called, "brake inspectors" as they randomly, at will, cross the highway in front of your vehicle. If your vehicle hits a cow, he must sell the vehicle, as it is most certainly bad luck, however, to whom ever buys the car it is just as certainly good luck. The Indian mind working in all complexity, paradox, and fairness. Never mind the dead cow.

And the crows, as big as eagles, almost, lift whole bananas off your breakfast plate and come back for the sugar, cardamom and honey (see our blog entry on this adventure). As a women, I must also address the continual ritual of killing female babies at birth either by poison or ingesting an uncooked grain of rice. This practice is slowly changing in the hearts of every family. The lasting memories are religious diversity and acceptance, hospitality, kindness, sense of humor and generosity.
