Portugal means "beautiful port". It is the most western country in Europe. During the past 3,100 years, Iberian, Celtic, Phoenician and Carthaginian, Roman, Greek, Germanic, Arabic, Jewish and Moorish civilizations have all had an influence on Portugal. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal was a major empire stretching from Brazil to the Indies. Portugal has many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, great beaches, architectural and historical sites, and a landscape full of olive trees and vineyards.
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has art, architecture, food and nightlife. It is a city of hills and most of the city lies on the north bank of the Tagus River . You must visit the Museum of Ancient Art which contains the countries greatest collection of paintings. It is located in a 17 th century Palace. The Market of Ribeira Nova is a must to get a feel for Lisbon. Restaurants and the regular person come to buy their fish and vegetables here. The British Cemetery is where Henry Fielding who wrote Tom Jones is buried. The Aguas Livre Aqueduct was built in the 18 th century and stretches for about 11 miles. You have to go see the Alfama in the old city to see the sixteenth century houses some still with their coats of arms. Baixa ( Lower Town ) is a shoppers' paradise and Bairro Alta is hopping well into the wee hours of the night. Before leaving Lisbon , an evening of Fado is definetly a must. Fado are "songs of sorrow" sung by Fadistas (Fado singers). This is considered an art in Portugal.
Portugal 's second largest city, Porto, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Palaces and Churches are Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Classic. It is situated on the Douro River with miles of vineyards growing on its slopes. Porto is actually a city of old and new. Drive to the heart of Portugal through the Estrela Mountain Range. This is the highest point in Portugal and is where sheep roam. This area is famous for its cheeses. Then go onto Evora, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This town is famous for its history, handicrafts and food. Then onto the Algarve which is one of Europe 's unique jewels. It is Portugal 's most southern province. It is famous for its spectacular scenery, 24 great golf courses, and fine regional cooking. Winters are mild in the Algarve and people play golf year round. In addition to golf, there is surfing, scuba diving, tennis, horseback riding, and clay pigeon shooting. This is truly a place to relax and to participate in many sports activities. However, all of Portugal is a very interesting historical and architectural country. You can also take cycling, wine and culinary tours. The food is delicious. You can stay in castles, charming and historical hotels.
